HERMAN STRAUSS

Herman Strauss has a Masters degree (M.Sc(IT)) in Computer Science from the University of the Free State (UFS) (received degree September 2008). Prior to doing his masters, he completed his B.Sc. Hons (IT) in IT Management and his B.Sc (IT) degree. He is a full-time web-architect, programmer and developer, and part-time musician based in Bloemfontein. He his currently the lead web-developer for Visible Speed Electronic Archiving, co-founder and sole developer of HouseBook as well as working on several other websites and freelance projects. He is skilled in the following areas: C# Windows desktop and API manipulation programming, MSSQL server, PHP/MYSQL, HTML, javascript, full-scale XAJAX applications, image editing, video and sound editing, and graphic design experience. In addition to Computer Science, he majored in cello (teacher: Arend Brink) and mathematics at the UFS. He also studied singing at UFS in 2006 and 2007 (teacher: Hanna Van Schalkwyk). |
He is a former winner of the Free State Musicon soloist competition and an ad-hoc member of the Free State Symphony and Odeion Symphonia Orchestras. In 2005 he was co-principal cellist in South Africa’s National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). In 2006, he was also a member of SANYO when the orchestra performed at the Berlin Philharmonic Theatre and Beethovenhalle in Germany.
With regard to singing, Herman has performed as a soloist at a variety of large concerts, birthdays, weddings, church services and other events since 2006. The most noteworthy of these are:
- 2006 Bloemfontein Rose Ball with full orchestra backing.
- 2007 Bloemfontein CRC church with band backing.
- 2007 Rapport Sing Jou Taal Bloemfontein with orchestra backing.
- 2008 Arco Musica 15 Year Anniversary Concert with full orchestra and choir backing.
- 2008 Eunice Birthday Event.
- 2008 Rapport Sing Jou Taal Bloemfontein with orchetra backing.
- 2008 Eunice Service at Trinity Church in Bloemfontein.
- In August 2008, Herman had a leading role in Eunice's Professional Musical - Showtime II, of which all shows were sold-out.
- In November 2008, Herman performed in the PACOFS presented concert "Nights in white satin - A tribute to Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli" where he performed
8 songs of Andrea Bocelli. The review of the show in the Volksblad quoted "Herman Strauss met sy tenoor stem het die gehoor se harte laat smelt". - Numerous events in 2009, 2010 and 2011, including weddings, church services, 2010 Bloemfontein Rose Ball, Villa Avianto French Festival, a concert at Oliewenhuis presented by Arco Musica, and a Solo performance at a Navy Red Concert.
